How to Choose the Correct Mattress Size
The mattress on your bed is extremely essential to determining the way you sleep at night. Yes, comfort is what you should primarily focus on before purchasing a mattress, but it is just as important to get the mattress size right. A smaller mattress will cause all sorts of issues and will not fit properly on the frame of your bed. Too large, and its edges will hand outside the bed frame, causing unnecessary damage to the sides of your mattress.
If you're shopping for a new mattress, you're either buying a new bed or are dissatisfied with your current mattress. Check out our mattress size guide below to get an idea of which size is going to be perfect for you. We took into consideration all major mattress sizes in the market, in order to help you determine the right size for your body height.
Here is a quick rundown of the 6 main mattress sizes, and their respective dimensions:
- Twin - 38” x 74”
- Twin XL - 38” x 80”
- Full - 54” x 74”
- Queen - 60” x 80”
- King - 76” x 80”
- California King - 72” x 84”
The first three sizes are perfect for being used by a single person. However if you are planning to buy a mattress for two, then the last three options are going to give you both ample space for a good nights sleep.
Twin Mattress Size
A twin size mattress is the smallest of the lot, and is designed to provide ample resting space for an adult or adolescent child. Children aged between 10-12 years of age can also use this mattress, as it will have more than enough space for them to jump around and spread their arms and feet during sleep. Some larger adult males above the height of 6’ might find the space on the Twin size a little limiting, which is why there is the larger version of this mattress, the twin XL.
Twin XL Mattress Size
The Twin XL is what you should buy if you’re an adult male above 6’ of height, and want to enjoy a comfortable sleep without having to worry about the bed size. The Twin XL is approximately 39” wide and is 80” long, this is perfect if you want to sleep in a upward-facing posture, with your hands and feet spread out to the sides.
Full Mattress Size
A Full mattress is the most commonly found mattress size in college dorm rooms as well as single bedrooms, and is about 54” and 74” long. The length is good enough for most adult people, baring certain 6 feet+ males. There is plenty of width on the mattress, and you can comfortably fit two 10-12 year old children in it. So if you have multiple children in the house, this might make a great mattress for them, until they grow old enough to have their own separate rooms. If you’re purchasing this mattress for two adults, remember that each adult will have a maximum of approximately 27” of sleeping space.
Queen Mattress Size
The Queen-size mattresses are among the most common household bed options, and are widely used in bedrooms due to their ability to comfortably fit two adults. The mattress measures 60” in width, and is 80” long, which means that it can easily provide enough room to a couple, and is also a great choice for guestrooms.
King Mattress Size
King size mattresses come in handy when you are buying a mattress to provide the maximum amount of sleeping space for you and your partner, especially if both of you like to spread your arms and feet in sleep. The width of a King-size mattress is an impressive 76”, and it measures 80” in length. The extra 16” of width that it provides can come in handy for couples who struggle with Queen-size beds, or you can even squeeze in 3 people, with each person getting nearly 25” of space. If you have 3-4 young kids in the house, and you want to put them all together in one room, then the King size is perfect for that job.
California King Mattress Size
At nearly 72” in width, and 84” in length, the California King is the largest mattress size that you can find on the market. It is perfect for couples who want zero compromises in space, and have to have maximum sleeping room during the night. Although the California King size is about 2” less in width than the regular King size, it is also 4” longer, making it perfect for people up to 7’ in height. Now, if you plan to sleep with your child or pet during the night, with ample room for all, consider getting one of these mattresses so everyone can sleep peacefully without disturbing others.
